‘The Warden’ in the running at Crime and Punishment Filmfest

‘The Warden’ is competing at the 9th International Crime and Punishment Film Festival in Turkey.

Iran much applauded film ‘The Warden’ is competing at the 9th edition of the International Crime and Punishment Film Festival in Turkey.

Directed by Nima Javidi, ‘The Warden’ is currently in the running at the Golden Scale Feature Film Competition section of the Turkish film event.

Iran title has contenders from Austria, Tunisia, France, Hungary, Qatar, Lebanon, Slovakia, Hungary, Belgium and Algeria. A total of 59 short and feature films are present at this year edition of the festival.

Last year, ‘Dressage’ represented Iran at the event.

“In 1966, a prison in south of Iran is being evacuated because of the proximity to the city’s new airport. Major Jahed, the warden, transfers the prisoners to the new prison and then soon receives a report that one prisoner, sentenced to death, is missing,” comes by the event’s official website as a brief synopsis for the film.

Produced by Majid Motallebi, ‘The Warden’ was premiered on the opening day of the 37th Fajr Film Festival where it won the Special Jury Award of the event.

‘The Warden’ received the awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Navid Mohammadzadeh), Best Cinematography (Houman Behmanesh), and Best Film at the 21st Iran Cinema Celebration.   

Some notable Iran film stars play roles in the flick, including Navid Mohammadzadeh, Parinaz Izadyar, Atila Pesyani, Setareh Pesyani, Habib Rezaee, Mani Haqiqi, Esmaeel Pourreza and Mohammad-Rasoul Safari.

The International Crime and Punishment Film Festival aims to “improve social awareness by communicating the repercussion of the relationship between crime and justice in cinema, contribute to social change by increasing communication, solidarity and cooperation, popularize the sense of equality and encourage people about it.”

The film event kicked off on November 22 and will run until November 28, 2019 in Istanbul.
